Abyss Literary Magazine is thrilled to announce Johnathan Stack as the winner of our Issue 02: CULTÚR cover competition. Selected from a pool of talented artists across Ireland, Johnathan's evocative piece captures the essence of Irish heritage and contemporary reflections on cultural identity.
Johnathan's artwork vividly depicts an old Irish coming-of-age ceremony, once a vital tradition in rural parts of Kerry and Cork. These ceremonies, often steeped in local customs and communal gatherings, marked the transition from childhood to adulthood. They were rich with symbolism and rites that connected the young to their heritage and community, emphasising the collective over the individual.
The artwork, with its striking imagery, immediately resonated with our editorial team. A Mary-like figure stands imposingly over kneeling children, her presence a potent reminder of the omnipresent nature of religious influence in Irish life. This scene evokes the complex tapestry of Catholic guilt, where religion, even as it recedes from the forefront of daily existence, continues to exert a subtle but persistent influence on personal and communal actions.
In Johnathan's portrayal, the juxtaposition of innocence and authority serves as a poignant commentary on how religion remains an integral part of our cultural psyche. The kneeling children, heads bowed in reverence or perhaps in the weight of expectation, symbolize the enduring impact of religious doctrines on our moral compass and societal norms.
The piece is more than just a depiction of a historical practice; it is a reflection on the enduring power of cultural traditions and their ability to shape and mold our identities. Johnathan Stack's artwork not only pays homage to a nearly forgotten rite but also invites viewers to consider the latent forces of tradition and belief that continue to guide our actions and thoughts.
We are honoured to feature Johnathan's work on the cover of Issue 02: CULTÚR. His art not only enriches our understanding of Irish culture but also challenges us to reflect on the unseen influences that shape our lives. Congratulations to Johnathan Stack for his outstanding contribution to Abyss Literary Magazine.
