As Seen in Issue 01: Reanimation
Director's Words:
Hollow Bones is a dramatic comedy set at a widow support group - 'The Jolly Dollys' where our two lead characters Tracey & Louise, two women from completely different social classes clash. Produced by the BFI Academy & 104 Films
After moving to the UK at 17 to pursue an acting career, I found myself at 18 with the opportunity to apply to one of the BFI's film academy courses and take a step behind the camera for a change. I have always wanted to write & direct films as well as act and wholeheartedly reject the idea that you must pursue one singular path in the industry and that an experienced understanding of every aspect of a film set leads to a richer understanding of how to tell a visual story. And that's what I want to do - and I had a story to tell. Growing up with split parents and living in both a working class & middle-class household, I felt that I had a unique perspective & experience with the idea of 'privilege' and wanted to explore that more. At my part-time job in a local village shop, I worked mainly with older ladies many of whom were widowed. Spending time with them, hearing their stories, and conversing with them moved me so deeply, and thus - Hollow Bones was born!
I pitched the idea to my group of 10 and after the first session, my co-writer Elena & got to work on the screenplay. After 4 weeks of intense pre-production and a last-minute scramble to secure our cast, I finally stepped behind the camera for the first time in my life and directed. It was a phenomenal experience to work alongside my collaborators and to learn so much along the way. I hope that when you watch this short film that you learn something about yourself or others - or maybe even from some mistakes that I made!
